A Very Occupied Pumpkin — Sewing Pattern & Tutorial

Create your own A Very Occupied Pumpkin — a hollow, lined fabric pumpkin with softly stuffed walls and little peek-through openings for tiny woodland friends.

Unlike a traditional stuffed pumpkin, this design stays hollow in the centre while each wall section is individually stuffed. The result is a soft, sculptural pumpkin with clearly defined segments and small openings where mini mice, hedgehogs or other tiny toys can peek through.

The optional removable lid is softly padded and finished with a fabric stem, leaf and curly tendrils for an extra decorative, storybook touch.

Finished pumpkin size:

Approximately 20 cm high × 25 cm wide
Approx. 7⅞ in × 9⅞ in

Final size may vary slightly depending on your fabric, stuffing and sewing.

This pattern uses some slightly unusual construction methods, especially when joining the outer fabric and lining at the same time and creating the separate stuffed wall sections.

The tutorial is highly detailed and photo-led, but I recommend being comfortable with curved seams, lining, hand sewing, ladder stitch, turning small pieces and stuffing soft toys.

Fabric recommendations

Both linen and medium-weight cotton work beautifully for this project.

For linen, I recommend approximately 180–250 gsm.

A lightweight fusible interfacing can be used on the outer linen fabric to add stability and help prevent stretching along the bias.

You can use the same fabric for the outer pumpkin and lining, or choose a contrasting lining fabric for a more decorative effect inside the pumpkin and around the peek-through openings.

Approximate fabric requirements:

• Outer fabric: 85 × 40 cm / 33½ × 15¾ in
• Lining fabric: 85 × 40 cm / 33½ × 15¾ in
• Fabric for leaf: 20 × 20 cm / 7⅞ × 7⅞ in
• Small fabric pieces for the stem and finishing details

You will also need polyester stuffing, sewing thread, strong hand-sewing thread, pins, fabric scissors, pinking shears, a sewing machine, hand-sewing needle and basic turning/stuffing tools.

About the openings

The pattern includes peek-through openings designed to suit mini toys approximately:

14–18 cm / 5½–7 in tall

You can make the openings slightly smaller if you plan to use smaller toys.

The tutorial uses 4 openings, placed on alternating pumpkin segments, but you can change the number or position of the openings to create your own version.

The mini mice, hedgehogs and other toys shown in the photographs are not included and are available separately.

The removable lid is included in the pattern.

The pattern is designed to be printed at 100% / Actual Size.

Please check the test square before cutting your fabric to make sure your printer has not resized the pattern.

Suitable for A4 and US Letter paper.
